Increasing plastic waste collection in the cities of Georgia with Behavioral Insights

Results of behavioral experiment (RCT) in Tbilisi and Batumi households with recommendations for scale-up.

Georgia aims to recycle 50% of plastic waste by 2025 and 80% by 2030. BISC Partners and UNDP Accelerator Lab collaborated on a pilot project in 2021 to encourage residents to separate plastic waste. The project implemented behavioral science principles to design infrastructure and communication messages to change behavior. The interventions had a positive impact, resulting in a 60% improvement in waste collection quality. Based on the findings, BISC Partners developed recommendations for future experiments and scale-up.
